Pencils In Action

Pencils In Action is a program combining the best of both therapeutic and tutorial techniques.  The child is evaluated by an occupational therapist and the intervention program is designed to meet the child’s individual needs.  Our handwriting specialist implements the program under the supervision of the therapist who also monitors weekly progress.  The individual treatment plan combines sensory-motor activities that facilitate fine motor coordination, visual-motor skills and postural control along with specific instruction, practice, and homework.  In addition to the fine motor and handwriting activities, the child will participate in gym activities designed to improve core strength, postural control and head, neck and eye muscle coordination; necessary foundations for successful handwriting.

This program is available for all levels from beginning printing, to cursive, to keyboarding.  We often use the “Handwriting Without Tears” Program as we have found this protocol to be highly successful.  However, if the school is using another handwriting approach we tailor the child’s program accordingly.

Pencils In Action is designed for children who:

  • Have difficulty placing the letters on the line
  • Have difficulty with the size and spacing of letters
  • Have “messy” handwriting
  • Complain of fatigue
  • Become easily frustrated when writing
  • Hurry through their homework
  • Neglect to show the breadth of their knowledge because they “hate” to write

Handwriting is a necessary skill for forming and communicating thoughts and ideas.  Unfortunately, increasing academic demands have forced schools to spend less and less time on teaching handwriting.  Add to this the fact that our children spend much more time plugged in electronically than they do developing fine motor coordination and it is easy to see why an increasing number of children are struggling with handwriting.  Despite the availability of computers, writing neatly and legibly in a timely manner is still critical to academic success. Many children have difficulties that require more than just simple practice, however not every child with handwriting difficulties requires ongoing occupational therapy intervention.

Summer camp

Therapy In Action’s summer camp offers an opportunity for supervised, sensory-motor play in an air-conditioned environment (with UV filtration system). The daily schedule includes gym play time, gym group activities such as parachute play and relays, lunch time, craft activities, cooking activities, and water and sand play. All of the activities are designed by an occupational therapist and can be easily adjusted so that every child can participate. Camp is Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (sharp), with drop-off option at 8:30 a.m.  Each week of camp has a theme and coordinating activities.

Play Pals

Play Pals provides children with the opportunity to improve their play and social skills in a small group setting under the supervision and guidance of an occupational therapist.  Groups consist of a “Rookie Player” and two “Pro Players” who all benefit from the Play Pals program.  The Rookie Player increases play and social skills in a safe and natural environment and the Pro Player learns how to be cooperative, empathic, and compassionate in a fun and unique environment.  Sessions consist of organized games and play, table top activities such as group crafts or board games.  Rookie Players bring their choice of Pro Players to form their own special group.  Please contact us for more information and details at info@therapyinaction.com
