Sensorimotor Groups: Occupation And Recreation

The sensorimotor play group for children who need to work on areas such as social skills, organizational skills, or sensory registration/modulation. Some of these children are not quite ready for our Get Linked social skills group or COPE (self-regulation) group because of their communication skills and inability to sit and attend to a group teaching style. Other children that may benefit from this group are those that are no longer in need of 1:1 treatment, but still need some occupational therapy directed activities.

Treatment Approach

This is a structured play group that will rotate between a variety of sensory inputs (vestibular, tactile, proprioceptive, visual, auditory, gustatory, and olfactory) to improve sensory modulation, organization of behavior, transitions, and peer interaction. For example, the children will participate in a gross motor activity (e.g. obstacle course relay game) and then transition to a tactile or art activity. Afterwards they may participate in a proprioceptive game followed by a calming activity. The therapist designs the play session to incorporate sensory strategies that will best support the self regulation and sensory modulation of each novice player while encouraging basic social skills.
