Handwriting Groups: Printing and Cursive

We at Therapy In Action see handwriting as a necessary skill for expressing and communicating ideas. Handwriting develops over time and is the highest level of communication. Therefore, it is something that must be taught. We believe the most effective way to teach writing is with a multi-sensory approach. With Jan Olsen’s “Handwriting Without Tears”, we have combined a variety of techniques including sensorimotor, visual-perceptual, organizational, postural control, fine motor control and eye-hand coordination.

Printing — Beginner/Intermediate

The beginner printing groups are for children who are able to recognize letters and are:

  • ready to learn printing
  • having difficulty learning
  • letter formation
  • holding the pencil incorrectly
  • having difficulty understanding where to place letters on the lines.
12 — 90 minute sessions

Cursive — Beginner/Intermediate

The beginner cursive groups are for children who are:

  • ready to learn cursive
  • having difficulty with printing or slanted cursive and would benefit from learning vertical cursive.
15 — 90 minute sessions

Printing and Cursive — Advanced

The Intermediate/advanced groups are for children who already know how to write but may:

  • have "messy" handwriting
  • reverse letters and numbers
  • have difficulty keeping letters on the line
  • get frustrated or tired when writing for longer periods of time
  • form some letters incorrectly
  • hold the pencil incorrectly
  • have difficulty making letters the correct size
  • have difficulty orienting letters and/or words to one another
5 - 120 minute sessions

Groups will be composed of children with similar skill levels and of the same age group.
