8-week group program to provide sensory and motor strategies
for improving attention and learning in the classroom. C.O.P.E.
uses sensory and motor approaches to keep the nervous system
functioning at an optimal level of alertness for paying attention
and learning. Although they may not be conscious of it, all
people use sensory strategies in this way. If a person’s
level of alertness is too high or too low for a given activity,
learning and performing are greatly sacrificed.

Food Is Fun is a treatment program for children who refuse to
eat or only eat a limited range of foods. The group uses a highly
structured, positive modeling, and positive feedback approach
to eating. The purpose of this group is to allow the children
to experience successful eating and steps to eating in a controlled
non-threatening environment and to provide the parents with
support and important strategies, skills and techniques to use
at home. The parents’ group offers a supportive environment
for learning. These are important differences between this feeding
group and other feeding programs.

Group sessions will identify each child’s basic skill
level and teach social skills through a variety of learning
methods including: role play, discussion, interactive games,
snack time and problem solving tasks. Because we believe that
people learn better by doing, we will be incorporating community
outings into the
lessons… giving the kids the chance to practice their
new skills!!

We at Therapy In Action see handwriting as a necessary skill
for expressing and communicating ideas. Handwriting develops
over time and is the highest level of communication. Therefore,
it is something that must be taught. We believe the most effective
way to teach writing is with a multi-sensory approach. With
Jan Olsen’s “Handwriting Without Tears”, we
have combined a variety of techniques including sensorimotor,
visual-perceptual, organizational, postural control, fine motor
control and eye-hand coordination.

The sensorimotor play group for children who need to
work on areas such as social skills, organizational skills,
or sensory registration/modulation. Some of these children are
not quite ready for our Get Linked social skills group or COPE
(self-regulation) group because of their communication skills
and inability to sit and attend to a group teaching style. Other
children that may benefit from this group are those that are
no longer in need of 1:1 treatment, but still need some occupational
therapy directed activities.
