Meet Susan H. Knox, PhD, OTR/L, BCP, FAOTA who is known all
over the world for her research and expertise on play and

California OT Association, USC, and the American OT Association.
Although we all know that she is Dr. Knox to those listening
to her seminars, she is happy to be “Sue” around
here.
Sue, how did you find out about occupational therapy?
I learned about it early, probably junior high or high school.
With my family background, it seems I’ve always known
about OT.
Why are you still an occupational therapist?
I can’t imagine doing anything else. I especially
like the combination of treating, teaching and research.
Why did you specialize in pediatrics?
I love kids and I love to play. Children are always growing
and learning in spite of their special needs.
What are some of your specific interests within pediatric
occupational therapy?
I’m interested in preemies, neonates, and children on
the autism spectrum. Also, I’m interested in sensory
integration, occupational science, and neurodevelopmental
techniques.
What do you enjoy about your job now and how do you feel
your work is worthwhile?
I like the flexibility and combination of evaluating, treating,
teaching, and research. Not only have I made a difference
in countless lives of children, but also my professional contributions
have benefited the profession as a whole.
What are some of your interests outside of work?
I love travel, arts and crafts, especially ceramics,
jewelry, gardening, reading, collecting, aerobic dancing,
and enjoying my husband, home, and cat.
